The Outdoor Partnership has recently been helping the local community in Rhosneigr develop surf life saving activities.
Surf lifesaving is a multifaceted activity that comprises key aspects of voluntary lifeguard services and competitive surf sport. Originating in Australia, it expanded globally. In the UK the greatest concentrations of clubs being in the South West of England and South to mid Wales.

Chelsey is from Bangor, Gwynedd, former pupil of Ysgol Tryfan and left school at 16 years of age and is a single mother. She is now 20 years of age and wanted to follow a career in the outdoors. She found working in the outdoor sector near impossible because she lacked the relevant qualifications and other factors like travel and child care.

The Outdoor Partnership has had a busy 2011. Many outdoor activity programmes, events and courses have taken place with over 10,000 local people taking part. Four hundred and twenty eight volunteers have assisted in a variety of sessions and events allowing 3400 people access to community clubs on their doorstep.

This year saw the second Outdoor Festival being held at Plas y Brenin, with over 150 attending over the course of the day, taking part in many outdoor activities and courses. All activity sessions were delivered by volunteer leaders, a key part to the success of the festival.
 

National Trust Purchase of Llyndy Isaf Farm could mean loss of free access

Thanks to donations the National Trust recently purchased Llyndy Isaf Farm, including Llyn Dinas, for £1 million so that:"future generations shall also enjoy it free from the threat of commercial development."
In contrast, a recent 'internal advisory document' from the Trust raises concerns that outdoor activity providers and education centres could find themselves paying to use the lake in the future.

Kayak only pool awards available at the beginning of 2012
There will be an option for clubs and the leisure centres to work through an updated version of the old ‘Pool Blades’ awards by the beginning of 2012.
These awards are designed for those who are limited to indoor pool sessions and the use of kayaks only, for example, club sessions in a swimming pool over the winter months.

A draft mountain bike marketing strategy 2012 - 2017 has been created by industry representatives in response to Visit Wales' changing role. Past marketing has focused on promoting trail centres but this strategy aims to widen the scope by including more of Wales' natural trails.

Yet despite the success of the Outdoor Partnership funded Canoe Wales paddlesports courses there still seems to be some confusion in the clubs about the process of registering for coach and leadership courses.

The Canoeing Foundation fund projects that support or promote canoeing ventures for Young People and/or disabled people. Applications are invited that support groups, provide equipment which can be used by a range of individuals. The usual grant is up to £1,000. Deadlines are 30 April and 31 October.

Winter training programme starting soon
The Paddlesports Academy run by Canoe Wales for the North Wales school clubs is opening up to all club paddlers of school age. The once monthly evening sessions will move to a fortnightly weekend slot for the winter programme . One session a month will be run at Play y Brenin and focus on slalom, wild water racing and sprint, the other monthly session will be run at Llyn Padarn and focus on polo and sprint.

Huw got hooked on kayaking at the age of ten, whilst growing up on Anglesey, mainly through trial and error. Later on he spent far too long working away as an aeronautical engineer and school teacher, before deciding to make a go of what he enjoys most in life. (After all it’s not a dress rehearsal!)

Celt when he was aged 5 abseiled off the Marquess of Anglesey Column along with his sister Tesni to raise funds to set up the Ysgol y Bont Climbing Club. The experience obviously gave him a head for hights whic proved useful on his first ascent in the Slate Quaries

After a couple of years in active preparation, the Discover Dolgellau ‘Challenge your Boundaries’ project saw its official birth last Saturday, at a surprisingly sun-drenched Coed y Brenin trail centre
In partnership with the Snowdonia National Park, Sport Wales, and Forestry Commission Wales, the aim of the project is to develop and promote adaptive mountain biking (aMTB) as a means by which active people with disabilities can regain access to the mountain wilderness, or experience it for the first time.

Locals runners excel in 11th Snowdonia Marathon

After three years of high winds and rain the organisers were hoping for some respite for the runners in this year’s Snowdonia Marathon. Unfortunately the weather was true to form and the worst day we have had all October!
Local ‘Eryri Harrier’ runner Rob Samuel won the race in a time of 02:36:45, with last year’s champion and course record holder, Richie Gardiner from Aberdare, coming in third in 02:41:02. Two other ‘Eryri Harrier’ runners were also in the top ten, Matthew Roberts in 6th and Gwyn Owen in 9th place.

Developments in outdoor climbing have been all but halted by the recent spell of bad weather. On the plus side the winter aggregates are now well underway at the Beacon and Indy climbing walls, and both are as popular as ever!
The popularity of indoor climbing has grown hugely in recent years and although the facilities are used by many climbers as training for outside on the rock, they are also enjoyed as a means of keeping fit in a similar way to going to the gym. Competitions like the bouldering aggregates have now become a part of the 'wall culture' and they can range from friendly events at your local climbing centre to those taking place at national and international level.

The Outdoor Partnership is currently developing a new ‘Pathways to Employment Outdoors’ programme. The Big Lottery Fund has indicated that they may grant the Outdoor Partnership the funding to implement the new programme. Part of the application process involves consultation with those who will benefit from the programme, to allow for all service uses and key stakeholders’ views to be known.

The Outdoor Partnership hosted an outdoor festival on Saturday held at Plas y Brenin, the National Mountaineering Centre. The Festival saw 150 local people take part in a range of outdoor activities and skills development workshops. Guest Speakers also attended the festival including Junior Skiing Champion Zac Pierce from Llanfairfechan, Extreme Kayaker Elia Wilkinson from Anglesey and Adventurous Climber Ioan Doyle from Bethesda, all of which gave up their time to talk and inspire everyone.

Vocational course new for Autumn 2011 term
The college autumn term has started with the introduction of a vocational sailing course term at the Pwllheli site of Coleg Meirion Dwyfor. Twenty-four students from the “Public Services” and “Sports Performance and Excellence” course have been given the opportunity to learn to sail as part of their courses. On successful completion of the course they will be awarded with the BTEC Certificate in Sailing and Watersports.
 

Clwedog Club win North Wales OnBoard Sailing Festival

The first ever North Wales OnBoard sailing festival got off to spectacular start, with Powys club Clwedog coming out on top.
There were 78 young sailors out on the water in Bala, the biggest ever turnout of sailors from all over North Wales, some of whom had only been sailing for a few days before the event. Clywedog sailing club, near Llanidloes won the best club overall at the event with 14 club members taking part.
 

Beacon Bouldering Aggregate starts

The Beacon Bouldering Aggregate, a friendly and fun bouldering competition, starts on October 2nd. For £2 you get your Aggregate score sheet and the rest is up to you.
A series of colour coded problems, according to difficulty, are set at regular intervals over the winter and you get a point for each one you successfully climb, irrespective of how hard it is. You simply tick them off on your sheet as you complete them - honesty is taken for granted.

If you're aged between seven and seventeen years old, then why not get along to the Beacon Climbing Centre on Saturday October 1st for its annual Back to School Bouldering Comp.
Don't be put off by the word competition, as it's a fun event that is also a good social occasion. If you're relatively new to indoor climbing, it is designed to be as much a way of increasing your confidence as it is winning, so there is no excuse for not getting involved.
 

Sandman Triathlon a big success

On the 18th September the second triathlon organised by Always Aim High Events, took place at Newborough on Anglesey. Among the participants was Tracy Evans of the North Wales Outdoor Partnership, warming up before she does the Snowdon Marathon.
Individuals or teams took part in either the Full Sandman (1 km swim, 60 km cycle and 10 km trail run) or the Sandman Sprint (400 m swim, 18 km cycle and 5 km trail run). The swim was parallel to Llandwyn Beach with a transition to bikes in the car park before heading out towards Llanfairpwll. The running at the end was on forest trails, with a memorable section up and over the sand dunes a couple of kilometres from the finish, to reach the beach.
 

New Mountain Biking Enduro Event at Coed y Brenin

A brand new mountain biking event in the forest that was the first to be developed for the sport in the UK and where trail expansion continues to this day. The Coed y Brenin (CyB) Enduro event is being organised by the same team from Summit Cycles, who are responsible for the ever-popular Dyfi Enduro, so you just know it's going to be good.
 

Swim Event Safety Award (SESA) course being piloted at local club

With the explosion of triathlons and open water swimming events in the North Wales area, Canoe Wales, supported by The Outdoor Partnership have organised a pilot SESA course to be run at Clwb Antur Dyffryn Peris. The SESA qualification is new and is designed to train and equip 2* and above paddlers to be competent in providing safety cover and basic first aid from a variety of boats.
 

Llanberis hosts Commonwealth showdown

Work has finally begun in Blaenau Ffestiniog on the Antur ‘Stiniog Mountain Bike Trails Project. Four challenging downhill trails are being laid out to designs by Simon Williams and Phil Saxena. Phil has designed downhill trails all over the world for the UCI World Cup racing series...therefore we’re in good hands! As well as this a jump-site, two pump tracks, an 8km cross country trail around Llyn Tanygrisiau and a visitor centre will be built

You will then be required to marshal one of three car parks and collect parking permits for approximately an hour. In return you will get a voucher for a free soup and roll at lunchtime and a corporate t-shirt. Watersports Facility Opens at Trearddur Bay

As part of the Development of Anglesey's Coastal Environment Project, a new cabin offering changing rooms, showers and a briefing room, has been opened at the improved car and trailer park, close to the Trearddur Bay Hotel. This 'community orientated' facility is aimed at local clubs, schools and activity providers to help promote participation in watersports.

All active paddlesports coaches need to update every three years and the update weekends are designed to allow them to do this by participating on relevant courses at a minimum cost.

Slate climbing became increasingly popular during the 80’s where many talented climbers moved their attentions from the mountains and into the quarries above Llanberis. Then slate then went slightly out of vogue up until recent years. During the last 5 years or so there has been a great deal of new routes being put up in the quarries, many of these routes are at far more amenable grades than their predecessors creating an environment where climbers of all levels can come and enjoy this unusual medium.

The Gwynedd Outdoor Partnership is purchasing a small fleet of sit on tops (SOTs) fitted with rod holders and suitable to fish from. These SOTs will be available to the fishing clubs to run ‘fishing from kayak’ courses. This is a very rapidly expanding activity with more SOTs being bought for fishing than for any other activity in recent years.

The first phase of new developments at Coed y Brenin Forest, as part of the £4 million Eryri Centre of Excellence project, has been completed and includes five kilometres of a brand new mountain bike trail known as the MinorTaur.
Coed y Brenin, near Dolgellau, was the first forest in the UK to be developed for the sport of mountain biking and its testing trails have now become a little more inclusive with this addition.

The opening of a new footpath now means walkers parking near the Pen y Gwryd can avoid the busy and potentially hazardous A4086 road to reach Pen y Pass and the start of the popular Miners Path or PyG Track up Snowdon.
Recently formalised parking near the Pen y Gwryd - £4 all day with a maximum stay length of 12 hours within 24 hours - is used as an alternative by Snowdon walkers to parking at Pen y Pass, which quickly fills up on most days with a reasonable weather forecast.

Sixteen schools in Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy are taking part in an extended pilot scheme of the Outdoor Award which has been developed by the Outdoor Partnership in conjunction with the Countryside Council for Wales. The scheme was trialled initially by 6 schools over a two year period and following feedback and an evaluation report by Celtica Mapping the guidelines were extensively re-written and the pilot scheme extended for a further year with an extra 10 schools taking part.

Snowdonia Slateman 22nd May 2011

The Snowdonia Slateman is a brand new trathlon being held in Llanberis on 22nd May. Competitors will begin with a 750 metre swim in Llyn Padarn - there's a 200 metre swim option for less confident swimmers - followed by a 51km road ride over the Llanberis Pass, down the Ogwen Valley to Bethesda and back to Llanberis via Tregarth. Finally, bike shoes will be changed for running shoes in order to complete the final hurdle, a challenging 11km run through the famous Dinorwig slate quarries. The overall winner will be crowned The Slateman.

Last year Canoe Wales introduced a new competition to their calendar. Based at Llandusyl Paddlers on the river Tefi the Welsh Universities Canoeing Competition was a huge success. This year the competition has been moved from mid February to the end of March as last year the students had to break the ice to get on the water.

Firstly a big 'Congratulations' to Ysgol Friars for winning the North Wales Schools Regatta held at Plas Y Brenin on the 24th October 2010. The school canoe clubs from Ysgol Eifionydd, Ysgol Caergybi and Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen also did very well and will join Ysgol Friars at the Welsh Schools Finals on the 12th of March 2011.

Menter Iaith Conwy and Communities First in Pen Llyn have been running a Welsh Language Surfing Club on Ynys Mon and Pen Llyn for young people from both areas including Conwy. There's no such thing? There is now!
Nick Bullen has built a huge chair to thank the local community of Corris for the warm welcome he received when he arrived in Wales six years ago. Nick Bullen wanted to give something back to the community because he will leave Wales and go back to his original home in South Africa. It took 15 people four hours to carry the huge chair almost to the summit. The chair sits just before the summit, 893 meters.

Our first group of ten participants started on the 9th and 10th of November, taking part in paddle sports, bouldering and climbing. Participants experienced open boating and kayaking activities, and for some, this was their first time in an open boat or kayak! Later participants had a go at testing their head for heights with an introduction to climbing indoors on Plas y Brenin's indoor climbing wall.

Paul has a long standing interest and involvement in the Outdoor Sector. From 1977 until 1991 he orienteer at national and international level including a period as the Welsh Orienteering captain. He holds a Mountain Leaders certificate. His many interests over the years included fell running, rock climbing, winter mountaineering, a member of the Mountain Rescue and SARDA. He completed 19 mountain marathons only finishing outside the top 10 on 4 occasions.

New Climbing Wall Leader Award Qualification

The CWLA has been designed to train and assess those who wish to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. This includes a wide range of structures (including, for example towers and mobile climbing walls) which will be referred to throughout as ‘walls’. These structures are deemed to have safety equipment, such as top anchors, in place and are maintained through a management regime. The award is concerned with ensuring good practice when developing leading skills. It covers the introduction, coaching and on-going development of the technical and movement skills required to lead routes.

Following on from our recent successful ML Modular programme, the Outdoor Partnership is planning to run another modular course in 2010. The training course is based around the ML syllabus but rather than having to attend 5 consecutive days, participants will undertake the modular course over a period of 3 weekends; approximately one weekend per month over 3 months allowing participants to consolidate their training.

Pupils at Conwy’s seven secondary schools are being given the opportunity to attend Mountain Biking Skills courses as part of a joint initiative between the Outdoor Partnership, Welsh Cycling and the 5x60 scheme. On successful completion of the course the youngsters will be give the opportunity to compete in an inter-school race meet being held at Nant Bwlch Yr Haearn Outdoor Education Centre and the Gwydyr forest on 1 June 2010.

Sonja and Eila, along with Nigel Dennis of Sea Kayaking UK are working with the Outdoor Partnership to bring Kayaking into primary schools on the Isle of Anglesey. Anglesey Sea Kayaker and member of Cybi Kayakers, Eila Wilkinson and fellow paddler Sonja Ewen from Ireland are attempting to circumnavigate the coastline of Ireland by Sea kayak in May of this year. The expedition is due to depart in mid may and depending on weather will take an anti clockwise direction around the 1970 miles of coastline.

The Anglesey based paddlesport club the Cybi Kayakers is to start offering kayak polo sessions to its members. Kayak polo is an energetic ball sport, played with two teams of five. As well as being competitive it also provides the opportunity to improve paddling skills and boat handling. Over the half term holidays, 24 Anglesey youngsters were given the opportunity to attend paddlesport taster sessions. The youngsters are now on their way to obtaining their BCU paddlepower passport accreditation. The Activities, organised by the Outdoor Partnership and funded by the Environment Agency 'Splash' grant and The Sports Council for Wales Free Swim initiative, have spurred a number of young people to join the Cybi Kayakers Kayaking club in Holyhead. The final day saw a group of 10 youngster being guided down the Afon Llugwy at Capel Curig.

Every year Plas y Brenin recruits 8 volunteers to assist with duties around the Centre. In exchange volunteers receive accommodation, training, 60 pounds per week and get a full grounding in life at an outdoor centre. Nik Royale is in the final stages of a training process, supported by the Outdoor Partnership, which will allow him to instruct at indoor climbing centres. The 36 year-old, who lives near Llanberis, Gwynedd, has a progressive form of cerebral palsy and needs to use a wheelchair at times. If successful, he hopes to set up disabled rock climbing clubs to break down the barriers.

First weeks in a new job are always a bit daunting but when you're given a nice shiny new climbing wall as part of your fist task, things don't look so bad. Taster sessions have been run very successfully with two major local schools sending upwards of 300 children to have a go at climbing before the end of the last summer term.

Before the summer break, S4C visited The Anglesey Adventure Club to film one of the regular Friday evening sessions as part of the 'Bro' series on life in Llanfairpwll. A few club members helped Iolo get to grips with the Indi wall. The edition was aired on the 19th August and can still be viewed on the S4C website.

This is the final indicator event for the Welsh National Squad, Welsh Yachting Association Regional Squads and Winter Invitational Windsurfer Training. In addition there will be a Onboard Club Regatta fleet with training, coach supported racing & social activities. There will be racing in Optimists ( inc Optibats), Toppers, a Handicap fleet, and Windsurfers (we don’t mind what board you bring, just as long as it has a dagger board).

The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust Grant Scheme recently awarded the Outdoor Partnership ten thousand pounds towards training and mentoring local volunteer leaders. The grant will go towards providing Mountain Leader and Climbing Wall awards, mountain biking courses, Rescue and Emergency Aid courses and Sports Coach UK workshops over the next twelve months.

Single Pitch Award (SPA) Assessment

Before attending the assessment course, candidates must have attained a training course, be able to lead severe grade climbs and hold a valid First Aid Course. The assessment takes place over two days and follows the Single Pitch Award syllabus. This is mainly a practical assessment with some theory sessions in the evening. The aim is to create an environment of assessment in which candidates can show their best. Candidates are advised to prepare fully and refer to the SPA Handbook so that they can gain most benefit from the weekend. A formal review and individual results are given on the final afternoon.
