This October runners will again be competing in one of the toughest marathons here in the UK, the Snowdonia Marathon. The inaugural Snowdonia Marathon was held in 1982, and was conceived as a dramatic alternative to the numerous city and town races becoming so popular. The demanding and spectacular route, encircling Snowdon, Wales' and England's highest peak, has given the event a unique place in the annual marathon calendar ever since.

The Welsh Yachting Association will be running a windsurfing camp between 18th - 21 August 2010 offering a solid introduction to windsurfing and a good base to continue from. First time windsurfers are welcome and for those with a bit more experience there will a racing camp running at the same date.

| New Climbing Wall Leader Award Qualification |

The CWLA has been designed to train and assess those who wish to teach lead climbing skills on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. This includes a wide range of structures (including, for example towers and mobile climbing walls) which will be referred to throughout as ‘walls’. These structures are deemed to have safety equipment, such as top anchors, in place and are maintained through a management regime. The award is concerned with ensuring good practice when developing leading skills. It covers the introduction, coaching and on-going development of the technical and movement skills required to lead routes. |

The National Navigation Award Scheme is a nationally recognized non-competitive personal performance navigation award allowing everyone to be able to plan and enjoy their walks in the countryside. Being an outdoor enthusiast Ailsa recently decided to change career and applied and successfully secured an 18 month Centre Assistant placement at the National Mountaineering Centre at Plas y Brenin. With the experience and training she will receive over the next year and a half Ailsa hopes that this will give her the skills needed to pursue a career in the outdoor activity industry |

We are pleased to announce that our guest speaker at our Outdoor Festival on 11 September 2010 will be Tori James who at the age of 25 became the first Welsh woman to summit Everest. Tori is a multi talented individual with a passion for extreme adventure in sub zero temperatures who, in May 2005, as a member of The Pink Lady PoleCats, became the first ever all-female team to complete the gruelling 360 mile Polar Challange race to the Magnetic North Pole.

There will also be a BBQ where those attending can relax and have something to eat before attending the final event of the day, a talk by Tori James, the first Welsh woman to summit Mount Everest.

In conjunction with North Wales Snowsports, the Outdoor Partnership is offering aspirant instructors and coaches the opportunity to attend a 2-day Level 1 Instructor training course (skiing) and a Level 1 Refresher course (skiing) for those who need to brush-up their skills. The course is due to run in July or August with dates to be confirmed to suit participants.

This modular course will run over three weekends and is intended for experienced walkers who wish to become leaders in the British lowlands and moorland. Further good news to report on the funding front is confirmation that the Outdoor Partnership has again been successful in securing SPLASH funding for the third consecutive year. For 2010/11 the EAW whom administers SPLASH funding has awarded the Outdoor Partnership 47K to invest in training, equipment and water-sports storage facilities. |

| Inspire and Achieve. - Ireland by Sea Kayak |

Sonja and Eila, along with Nigel Dennis of Sea Kayaking UK are working with the Outdoor Partnership to bring Kayaking into primary schools on the Isle of Anglesey. Anglesey Sea Kayaker and member of Cybi Kayakers, Eila Wilkinson and fellow paddler Sonja Ewen from Ireland are attempting to circumnavigate the coastline of Ireland by Sea kayak in May of this year. The expedition is due to depart in mid may and depending on weather will take an anti clockwise direction around the 1970 miles of coastline. |

The Anglesey based paddlesport club the Cybi Kayakers is to start offering kayak polo sessions to its members. Kayak polo is an energetic ball sport, played with two teams of five. As well as being competitive it also provides the opportunity to improve paddling skills and boat handling. Over the half term holidays, 24 Anglesey youngsters were given the opportunity to attend paddlesport taster sessions. The youngsters are now on their way to obtaining their BCU paddlepower passport accreditation. The Activities, organised by the Outdoor Partnership and funded by the Environment Agency 'Splash' grant and The Sports Council for Wales Free Swim initiative, have spurred a number of young people to join the Cybi Kayakers Kayaking club in Holyhead. The final day saw a group of 10 youngster being guided down the Afon Llugwy at Capel Curig. |

Every year Plas y Brenin recruits 8 volunteers to assist with duties around the Centre. In exchange volunteers receive accommodation, training, 60 pounds per week and get a full grounding in life at an outdoor centre. With the 4.5M 'Blaenau Ymlaen' regeneration scheme announced last week these are exciting times for Blaenau Ffestiniog with another exciting project about to be unveiled. A 2 year development process for developing an ambitious and exciting series of mountain bike trails in and around Blaenau Ffestiniog will reach an important phase this month as local opinion is sought before plans are submitted to planning for a key aspect of the whole development. |

Nik Royale is in the final stages of a training process, supported by the Outdoor Partnership, which will allow him to instruct at indoor climbing centres. The 36 year-old, who lives near Llanberis, Gwynedd, has a progressive form of cerebral palsy and needs to use a wheelchair at times. If successful, he hopes to set up disabled rock climbing clubs to break down the barriers.

Before attending the assessment course, candidates must have attained a training course, be able to lead severe grade climbs and hold a valid First Aid Course. The assessment takes place over two days and follows the Single Pitch Award syllabus. This is mainly a practical assessment with some theory sessions in the evening. The aim is to create an environment of assessment in which candidates can show their best. Candidates are advised to prepare fully and refer to the SPA Handbook so that they can gain most benefit from the weekend. A formal review and individual results are given on the final afternoon. |

Anglesey sailor Bleddyn Mon has been crowned RYA Volvo Youth National Championships after he won the 29er crown on the West Coast of Scotland. Mon who has twice won the 29er class National title as well as winning Youth silver at the 2008 29er Worlds in Australia, went into last week’s Championships in Largs desperate to go one better than the Youth Nationals silver he claimed with former crew Tom Humphreys in Pwllheli last year.

The North Wales Outdoor Partnership has received a grant of £5000 to train volunteer leaders from the lottery-funded grants programme 'Awards for All Wales'. Over the last 3 years, the Outdoor Partnership has set up 28 NEW community outdoor clubs ranging from mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, sea kayaking, hill walking, street orienteering, to multi activity clubs. Last year the Partnership received £5000 from Awards for All to train 49 volunteer leaders within these clubs. The community clubs currently have over 1700 members and cater for juniors, adults and families.

Over the half term break the Plas Cybi Partnership in Holyhead ran a day of Cycling activities for the young people of Holyhead. The day was ran in conjunction with the Councils road safety team, who organised cycling road safety skills and the Outdoor Partnership, who introduced the young people to basic mountain bike skills. It is hoped that cycling activities will continue with a bike maintenance course in the future. |

The Group is aiming to offer more varied opportunities for girls in the area and to attract more members. |

This was a chance for them to climb and compete with other ‘likeminded climbers’ from the area, following a long winter of training on club nights.

Eryri Youth Initiative was established in 2007/08 to give young people the opportunity to learn about sustainable living through outdoor experiences in Eryri. Through cultural, environmental, conservational and physical activities undertaken in a mountainous environment, it offers young people the opportunity to develop personal and practical skills whilst having a good time. |

This practical 2 day REC course taking place over a single weekend is an ideal opportunity for those intending to gain any National Governing Body awards in 2010. It is recognised as the minimum qualification for MLTUK, ML summer and winter awards, Single Pitch Supervisors Award, RYA, BCU, BASI, ASSI, BOF and by most other National Governing Bodies.
