The Outdoor Partnership
Who are we
In 2003 it became clear that the people in North West Wales had limited
access to outdoor activities in the magnificent countryside where
they lived. As a result, opportunities for healthy lifestyles,
securing employment and self-fulfilment were being missed.
Following several consultations with the private, public and voluntary
sectors involved in the outdoors, a working group of representatives
was established and a 3 year strategy was produced.
In April 2005, the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership was formally
constituted and thanks to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government
through the Sports Council Wales, 4 key members of staff were appointed
in October 2005. Over the autumn period, we have begun to turn the
vision of the strategy into practical reality.
Our Vision
To achieve an active, healthy and inclusive Wales, where outdoor
recreation provides a common platform for participation, fun,
achievement and employment, which binds local communities,
creates a sustainable use and understanding of the environment
of Wales.
Our Mission
To improve opportunities for more local people in North West Wales
to achieve their potential through outdoor activities.
Priority Areas of Work
- Foundation level opportunities.
- Participation level opportunities.
- Performance and excellence.
- Volunteer recruitment, retention,
training and support.
- Increased levels of employment for local
people.
- Outdoor Education Provision.
The way forward
- To develop, promote and deliver outdoor activity programmes,
working with local community groups, schools, youth service and
other target groups to meet local needs. Thus providing appropriate ‘first-time’ experiences
in outdoor activities at a level of personal choice.
- To establish
sustainable ‘Club based’ outdoor recreation opportunities
across North West Wales (including supporting existing outdoor club and community
groups) in collaboration with relevant bodies, organisations and community groups.
- Identify appropriate opportunities, through partnership, for
individuals to progress to higher levels of performance, competition
and leadership if they so wish.
- Recruitment, retention, training
and support mechanisms for local volunteers.
- Identify a system
which allows people, through participation, experience, skills
and qualifications to access employment within
the sector.
- Encourage and support schools to make outdoor education
a permanent provision within their curriculum.
- Provide an ‘Outdoor
Partnership’ Website which will become the outdoor
recreation resource library for teachers, youth leaders, community groups
and clubs, families, youths and children in North West Wales.
