Volunteer of the Month: March 2018

April 24 2018

Volunteer of the Month for March is John Smith of Merioneth Yacht Club for his dedication in re-shaping the aims of Merioneth Yacht Club as they evolve from traditional yachting to other forms of water based activity.

This involved helping to develop new disciplines such as kayaking and encouraging further developments in existing activities like celtic rowing and dinghy sailing.

John along with other volunteers, has supported the development of local events like the Open Water Swim part of the Barmouth ‘Hurly Burly’ for the 2nd year in 2018, and not forgetting the Mawddach Paddlefest which he helped save from closure a couple of years ago, and is now in its 6th. or 7th. Year!

John has also helped to re-model the Three Peaks Yacht Race this year, as well as helping to set up a possible Life Saving Club as a co-operative effort between MYC, RNLI, Harlech Pool and SLSSW.

He was also responsible for writing the initial grant applications, and the setting up of the Barmouth Harbour community pontoon, John is an active member of the Viaduct Access Group trying to get a new active travel route from Barmouth to the coastal path over the Mawddach - which will enable recreational and sporting events like walking, running and cycling for able bodied and those with additional or assisted needs to access local routes.
